Bastien Piano Method
An overview
Bastien is one of the several
piano methods available to teach piano. They have a good collection of books which takes you right from the beginning to the advanced levels. The concepts are laid out in an easy to follow manner. Though for the beginner books, you may need to supplement the lessons with extra songs, since the various musical concepts are introduced
a bit too soon for good retention by students.
The different Bastien Piano method books
The Very Young Pianist (Ages 4-7)
This is a set of 3 books which teaches you finger numbers (1-5), musical alphabets (A-G) and the different key signatures on the grand staff. After completing these three books, the students would move to the regular Basics curriculum.
Bastien Piano for the Young Beginner (Ages 5-7)
This course consists of two books - Primer A and Primer B. The objective is to give sufficient lessons to be comfortable to read on the grand staff. After completing these two books, the students would move on to Level 1 of the Basics.
Bastien Piano Basics
This course consists of five levels - Primer and levels 1 to 4. Each level has a set of books - Piano Theory, Performance (Repertoire), Technique, Sight Reading. You will find accompaniment CDs for all these levels.
Bastien Older Beginner Piano Course

Multi-key solos. Multi-key solos simply mean that the songs would have key signature changes - i.e. sharps and flats - within the song.
This is one of the best courses Of all the Bastien courses, simply because it tries to
'bridge the gap' between the basics course and the advanced courses; you will not find many good courses in this area!

Final thoughts...
As with most methods, the beginner courses are quite popular for this piano method; the intermediate course offered is also very good. In general though, lot of students feel that the lessons in the Bastien method should be having more variety and should not be more tilted towards classical. But finally, the choice of a piano method is person dependent since lot of us have preferences and favorites. Many teachers use a combination of piano methods so feel free to use whatever suits you.
